My Top Ten TV Shows of 2014

3 Jan

tv show title

Television is still where it’s at for me. It has been for at least the last 6 years, maybe longer. If someone asks me where to find the best writing, characters and narratives, which admittedly would be a strange question, I point them in the direction of TV. TV does what movies can’t do. Telling a long-form narrative story, slowly and gradually evolving characters over the course of years. When you get engrossed in television, it makes it very hard to engage properly with movies. Movie plots start to feel forced and condensed. It’s why most of my favourite movies recently have either been big showy blockbusters or tight character pieces. It’s probably why I didn’t quite engage with Boyhood the way most people did. It’s an excellent film, but its beats were familiar from Friday Night Lights, which covered a lot of the same ground week in week out, and was able to explore coming of age in Texas with more depth and scope.

No matter how tense, or exciting a movie gets, it can never match television. When an episode of any of the following TV shows finished, I was positively giddy in anticipation for the next episode. Either hyped up from tension or comedy, I could barely stand to wait another week to find out what happened next. That constant sense of excitement and expectation, thanks to some of the best writing and acting being done today, is something that movies will never be able to match. Following along with the conversation online as a show airs, seeing people in the comments section of The AV Club, excitedly discussing the latest episode, wondering what the next one will bring, is yet another experience movies won’t be able to capture. Movies are almost transient by nature. They flit in and out of our lives, while television is more constant, for the few months the latest series of a TV show is on, it’s a persistent presence in your life. This list of my top ten TV shows are the shows this year, that I would watch the second they became available and would wait feverishly for the next episode. It’s by no means exhaustive. I fell off the TV train for a bit in the latter half of the year, but now the new year has started and with it it will bring new seasons of the following shows, and I absolutely cannot wait.

*A word of warning, I’ve tried to keep spoiler free, but if you haven’t watched season 1 of Hannibal, you may want to avoid watching the clip attached to the piece. Though it will probably make you want to watch the show if you haven’t seen it!*

My Top Ten movies of 2014

1 Jan

title

2014 was the year that films managed to claw their way back into pop culture relevance for me. For the last few years I would have struggled to come up with a list of top 5 movies of the year. Television has been where its at for me, and though I largely still think TV is the place to be when it comes to writing, narrative and characters, 2014 was the year film came out swinging, providing some experiences that are only possible in cinema. Whether it’s big, entertaining blockbusters, or brilliantly self-contained character pieces, 2014 was the year I began to fall in love with cinema again, rather than treating it like an old acquaintance who, while enjoyable enough to be around from time to time, couldn’t compete with my love of Television, video games, and my rekindled love of books. It looks like there are going to be some incredible films in 2015, so hopefully film manages to hold onto its place. Until then, here’s my top ten list of films from 2014.
